Jeanne De Clisson: 'The Lionness Of Britanny'.

Jeanne De Clisson: 'The Lionness Of Britanny'. 2019. Ink on Lining Paper.

A Breton noblewoman turned pirate, who sought revenge against the King of France, Philip VI and the Duchy of Brittany Charles de Blois for the unfair execution of her husband, Olivier de Clisson. The few ships that made up her Black Fleet were painted black with blood-red sails to put fear in her enemy. She severed the heads of anyone of French nobility that crossed her path (symbolic of her husband's death), as well as entire crews of French ships.
