The Underclass, Underculture  & History From Below

A concertina project depicting the history of punishment and persecution on the lower classes by the authorities.

The Pillory was one of many forms of punishment (along with labour laws and vagrancy acts) used in the late middle ages when serfs gained freedom and vagrancy increased, off the back of Feudalism failing considerably; but even more so into the early modern era (1500 - 1800 roughly) as a clampdown on vagrancy, begging and radicalism etc. All part of a crusade on lower class freedom and empowerment, and keeping them in their place.
